Corning OSP Solutons for FTTH Networks

Corning Cable Systems Outside Plant (OSP) System for Fiber to the Home utilises pre-connectorised solutions to cost effectively meet the demands of volume deployment of fibre to residential premises.

The demands placed on the passive equipment in FTTH networks are far higher than any previously deployed optical infrastructure. These networks must be more flexible and dynamic.

Corning Cable Systems EvolantĀ® Outside Plant (OSP) Solution for FTTH Networks is specifically designed to meet the challenges faced by Network Operators rolling out large-scale FTTH applications. It comprises comprehensive product sets designed to enable Network Operators to significantly reduce the costs of network build and operation, speed up deployment as well as increase customer satisfaction.

Pre-connectorised products can reduce the labour burden of FTTH rollouts and provide a lower overall installed cost compared to conventional spliced solutions. Significant savings can also be realised through lower operation and maintenance costs.

This solution has been developed specifically for high volume national FTTH rollouts in an overlay build scenario. However, these products are just as applicable to smaller projects, including full provision of fiber in greenfield builds.

The key advantages of the pre-connectorised solution are:

  • Fast, low cost installationLow skill installation, in particular for the customer drop
  • Modular network build
  • High reliability. Fiber jointing is carried out in quality controlled factory environment. All pre-assembled components are supplied fully tested
  • Lower operations costs. Easier network configuration and fast access to optical network for testing and maintenance purposes
  • Easy swap out of components for future network upgrades

With this system, SFU customer connections can be achieved without the need for skilled labour which gives significant operational cost savings over the lifetime of the network.

At the heart of this system lies the IP68 rated OptiTapTMconnector which is based on an SC/APC connector but housed inside an environmentally hardened, rugged connector body. This patented design is the first and only optical connector to be used in volume in the external network and is already proven with over 11 million OptiTapTMports now installed worldwide in FTTH networks by mid 2009.

This system is the only FTTH solution where the customer drop can be achieved with a simple plug-and-play approach. Some other pre-connectorised FTTH drop solutions are based on standard indoor connectors which must be mounted inside conventional closures.

Rollout Speed and Skilled Labour Benefits

As the size of any FTTH rollout increases, the constraint in the speed of the rollout will focus on the availability of skilled labour. This has been proven to be the case in a number of markets where large FTTH deployments have taken place. Like any resource which is in demand, the cost of that skilled labour will inevitably increase. One key advantage of the pre-connectorised solution is that fewer field based skilled installers with splice capability are required.
